When it comes to C-pop (i.e. Chinese language pop music), there is no authoritative year-end chart. We’re talking about well over a billion people throughout the Chinese territories and beyond. Compiling such a list would be a formidable task. A number of radio stations in various cities put together their own charts. Singapore’s Yes 93.3 is highly respected, and on New Year’s Eve 2020-2021, the station counted down its reckoning of the biggest Mandarin songs (often called Mandopop) of the year. We list them all below in Chinese text. For the Top 10, we include English names and titles with a little info on the songs/artists and throw in a few music videos. (Note: we have used Hanyu pinyin romanization for the surnames and place names).
1) STAY WITH YOU / 林俊杰 (JJ Lin)
Hometown hero JJ Lin tops the year-end 100 with smash hit “Stay with You”. He has been churning out ballads since his debut in 2003.
2) 我们没有爱错 / 潘嘉丽 (“We’re Not Wrong” by Kelly Pan)
Singapore supports another of its homegrown artists, a former stewardess at Singapore Airlines. She has been releasing music since 2005.
3) 一一 / 田馥甄 (“One After Another” by Hebe Tian)
One of three from the oriental spice girls S.H.E, Hebe Tian has been the most prolific in releasing music as a soloist. She has perhaps the raspiest voice of the three.
4) 小时候的我们 / 周兴哲 (“When We Were Young” by Eric Zhou)
Eric is newer at the game, debuting in 2014.
5) 太阳 / 邱振哲 (“Sun” by PikA)
This song is from 2016 but obviously was a big hit in Singapore in 2020. PikA (Qiu, Zhenzhe) got his start in Chinese talent search show Sing My Song.
6) 刻在我心底的名字 / 卢广仲 (“The Name Engraved on My Heart” by Crowd Lu)
Crowd has continued to be a popular singer since his start in 2008.
7) 速食爱情 / 四坚情 (“Modern Love” by WOLF)
WOLF is a group of four singers Kenny Qiu, Nine Chen, Wayne Huang and Jiehong Lai. They formed following participation in a werewolf role-playing game on a variety show.
8) MOJITO / 周杰伦 (Jay Zhou)
Jay was feelin’ the Cuban breezes in 2020.
9) 没有你会是怎样 / YES 933 DJ 、梦FM (“How Would It Be Without You”)
Yes 933 DJs put together this number, definitely a fine effort.
10) 别勉强 / 邓紫棋 、周兴哲 (“Don’t Force It” by G.E.M. and Eric Zhou)
Shanghai born, Hong Kong raised G.E.M. (aka Gloria Tang) teamed up with the aforementioned Eric Zhou on this mellow charmer.
